Sports news: second weekend of December 2025

Nadia Battocletti became the European Women’s Cross Country Champion for the second time in a row, and Thierry Ndikumwenaye, who was third last year, won gold among men at the 31st European Cross Country Championships. Ines Fitzgerald won the U20 women’s race for the third time in a row, and the Italian national team retained the title in the mixed relay. Spain topped the medal standings with 8 medals (3 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze), ahead of Belgium (3-0-0) and Great Britain (2-3-1). France became the leader in points (44), beating Spain (35) and Britain (29). The next European Cross Country Championships will take place on December 13, 2026 in Belgrade.

  • Women’s (adults, 7.47 km): Nadia Battocletti defended her title, finishing in 24:52. Megan Keith (Great Britain) was second (25:07), ahead of Yasemin Can (Turkey) – 25:13. Team standings: Belgium won historic gold, all three participants made it to the top 7.
  • Men (adults, 5 laps): Thierry Ndikumwenaye (Spain) sensationally beat world champion Jimmy Gressier (France) at the last turn – 22:05 vs 22:08. Bronze – Dominique Lobalu (Switzerland) after the photo finish (22:23). Team gold: Spain – a record 11th time.
  • Mixed relay (5.96 km): Italy became champion for the third time, ahead of Great Britain and Portugal.
  • U23 Women: Maria Forero (Spain) – 19:59, silver – Ilona Monenen (Finland), bronze – Pia Schlattmann (Germany).
  • U23 Men: Nicolas Griggs (Ireland) – 17:47, the first Irishman with individual gold. France took silver and bronze.
  • U20 Women: Ines Fitzgerald (Great Britain) — 14:35, third consecutive victory.
  • U20 Men: Willem Renders (Belgium) – 13:11, the first team gold for Belgium.

International crosses and races

  • The cross country in Botswana was won by Lavinia Haitope (Namibia) at a distance of 10 km – 36:03, among men – Karabo Bosele (Botswana) – 31:31.
  • 15-year-old Natasha Dudek (Poland) and Jackson Spencer won the Brooks XC National Championships (5 km) – 16:56 and 15:11.
  • Lauren Ryan became the Australian champion in the 10,000 m (32:06.66), among men – Seth O’Donnell (27:59.65).
  • The race in Sion (Switzerland) was won by Sarah Madeleine (France) — 15:11 (7 km), Cleent Deflander (Belgium) — 19:25.
  • The winners of the cross in Zurich were Vinny Jeptarus (Kenya) – 12:20 (4 km), Abderazak Suleman (Eritrea) – 14:51 (5.3 km).
  • The race in Yère (France) was won by Fadouwa Ledem — 31:31 (10 km), men — Soufian Boucantar (Morocco) — 28:28.
  • The Spanish National Championship at Alcalá de Henares was won by Marina Martinez – 25:49 and Carlos Saez – 22:11 (7.1 km).
