Sports News: Last weekend of December 2025

At the end of December, traditional New Year’s races were held in different countries, which brought together the world’s leading athletes. The athletes showed high results, set records and confirmed their readiness for the new season.

Spain: Cross de Amurrio

On December 28, the WA XC Tour Silver series race took place in Amurrio. Younes Knia won the men’s 9 km race (28:29), ahead of Kenyan Brian Kipta (28:35). In the women’s 9 km race, Dorkus Chepkwemey from Kenya confidently won (32:41), the second was Naima Ait Alibu (33:17).

Portugal: São Silvestre and Funchal

In Lisbon on December 27  , Salome Afonso (32:55) and world champion in 1500 m Isaac Nader (28:33) won  at the São Silvestre de Lisboa race (10 km).In Funchal on December 28, at the 66th Sao Silvestre race,  Joana Soares (20:13) and Nuno Pereira (17:11) became the best, who was significantly ahead of the Lithuanian Mindaugas Balčiauskas (17:37).

Germany: records in Aschau

On December 27 in Aschau, at the Aschauer Vorsilvesterlauf 5 km race, the  track record was set by Olympic participant Florian Brehmm (13:55). Among women, Elena Burkard won (16:05), also with a record.

Other European starts

  • El Masnou (Spain): Dmitry Seryogin (14:37) and Oria de Rueda (16:35).
  • Ribble Valley (Great Britain): Verity Ockenden (32:18) and Matt Ramsden (29:05, personal best).
  • Ankara (Turkey): Dilek Ozturk (35:08) and Diyar Ergüven (29:24).

Asia and Africa

  • Ajman (UAE): Ethiopians Lulu Negera (61:33) and Bekesh Olani (70:20) were the best in the half marathon.
  • Kenitra (Morocco): Moussab Hadout (28:52) and Merieme Azroor (33:27) won the Kenitra 10K race.

Traditional Boxing Day Races

In Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, festive starts took place:

  • Hamilton (Canada): Stephanie Ryall (60:19) and Sergio Ráez Villanueva (51:57).
  • Clivedon (Great Britain): Deborah Bruce (22:05) and Felix McGrath (18:33).
  • Stranorlar (Ireland): Mark English (15:08) and Jessica Coyne (16:27).
