An overview of world records and best victories in road running events during 2025 year

The year 2025 has become one of the most dynamic in the history of athletics. Athletes from all over the world set new records at different distances and demonstrated high results. We offer you to recall the brightest moments and events that shaped the running season.

On the eve of 2025, namely on December 31, 2024, at the Cursa dels Nassos race held in Barcelona, Beatriz Chebet became the first woman to cover a distance of 5 km in 13 minutes 54 seconds. A few weeks later, in February, at the half marathon in Ras Al Khaimah, Ejgayehu Taye wrote her page in history. She won with a result of 65 minutes 52 seconds.

Spring brought even more high-profile victories. In March, Tadese Takele won the Tokyo Marathon with the best result of the season in the world – 2:03:23. Sutume Kebede also improved the women’s result of the season in the world – 2:16:31.

In April, Yomif Kejelcha set a record in the 5 km in the Herzogenaurs. The athlete finished in 12 minutes 54 seconds. Also at the competition in the Herzogenaurs, Agnes Ngetich made history as the first woman to run the 10 km in 29 minutes 27 seconds.

The first European Road Running Championships ended with a resounding victory  for Ilias Auani. He won his title at the marathon distance with a result of 2:09:05. For Italy, his victory was one of the key in the season. Among women, Chloe Herbier held a strong position. She won both the individual title and the team title in the women’s half marathon with a time of 71 minutes 39 seconds.

At Paris Half Marathon, Kennedy Kimutai won the men’s race with a time of 60 minutes 16 seconds. Jaclyn Cherono surpassed her previous results and set a new personal best of 67 minutes and 14 seconds.

The London Marathon set a record for the number of finishers — 56,640.

Tigist Assefa won the women’s marathon race in London with a new world record of 2:15:50. Among men, Sebastian Savet won. He showed the second fastest time in the history of the marathon – 2:02:27.

In the summer, Faith Kipyegon again made the whole world watch with bated breath. The Breaking4 project  aimed to set a world record and run one mile out of four minutes, but her attempt ended only with a personal best of 4:06.91.

In August,  the Sydney Marathon ended with two competition records at once. Among men, Heilmariam Quiros triumphed. His time was 2:06:06. Among women, the winner was Sifan Hassan, who won with a result of 2:18:22.

In September, world champion Sebastian Save won the Berlin Marathon in Germany with a time of 2:02:16. He set a personal best and the best result of the season in the world.

In October, during  the World Daily Running Championships in Albi (France),  Sarah Webster covered 278.622 km in 24 hours.

In November, the New York Marathon rewrote history and surpassed this year’s London Marathon in terms of the number of finishers. The route was covered by 59,226 participants.

But the records did not end there. Hellen Obiri won the marathon with a new course record of 2:19:51. 

Winter also started brightly. In December, at the marathon in Valencia, the best result of the season in the world was traditionally updated. Joycelyn Jepkosgei set a new track record and a personal best of 2:14:00.

The final touch of the season was  the European Cross Country Championships, which took place on December 14. Nadia Battocletti won the European Women’s Cross Country Championships for the second time in a row. The athlete crossed the finish line with a time of 24 minutes 52 seconds. Thierry Ndikumwenayo won gold in the men’s race and finished first in 22 minutes and 5 seconds.

Ukrainian athletes also had a successful year. At the Polish Road Running Championships in Gdansk, Mykola Mewsha won the 10 km race with a time of 29 minutes 14 seconds. Victoria Kaliuzhna won gold at the half marathon in Poznan in 1:12:05.

The year 2025 has once again shown that running remains one of the most dynamic disciplines in athletics. Athletes all over the planet are raising the bar higher and higher and motivating others with their achievements.
