Sports news: second weekend of January 2026

January of athletics started the year with a number of bright events: the World Cross Country Championships in the United States, record races in Valencia and marathons on different continents. African runners traditionally confirmed their dominance, but it was not without surprises – Australia won the mixed relay, and European athletes set new records. Below are the highlights and results.

At the 46th World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee (USA), held in hot conditions in Tallahassee, Kenya topped the medal standings. Kenya and Ethiopia each won three gold medals, but Kenya added four more silvers against Ethiopia’s two.

Agnes Ngetich and Jacob Kiplimo won the senior races with a landslide, while Australia won the mixed relay, where Olympic medalist Jess Hull finished. Kiplimo became one of the few athletes to win three titles in a row. The U20 races were won by Kenya’s Franklin Kibet and Ethiopia’s Martha Alemayo, who defended her title.

Andreas Almgren in Valencia set a European record in the 10 km (26:45), entering the top 6 in the world. Brenda Jepčirčirčir won the women’s race (29:25), and Elish McColgan updated the European record (30:08).

Fantaye Belineh won the Houston half marathon (64:49), and Habtom Samuel won the men’s race with a course record (59:01). The marathon was won by Zuhair Talbi (2:05:45), setting a course record.

Ruthie Aga and Davit Wolde retained their titles in  the Xiamen Marathon, China.
