Sports News: Third weekend of January 2026

During January 15-18, dozens of prestigious starts took place in different parts of the world — from cross country to marathons. Athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia traditionally showed high form, winning most of the victories.

In Jaén, during the 43rd race of the Carrera Internacional Noche de San Antón at a distance of 10 km, the victory was won by the Moroccan Abderrahmane Aferdi, who ran the track in 28:04, and the 19-year-old representative of Ethiopia Mekedes Alemeshete with a result of 31:32.

The Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza took place in Elgoybar, where Olympic champion Winfred Javi confidently won the women’s distance of 7.6 km, ahead of her closest rival by more than a minute. In the men’s start, Beriga Aregawi, who recently became the vice-champion of the world in cross-country, confirmed his stable form.

In the Portuguese city  of Figueirada‑Foz, during the national championships in the 10 km, Rui Pinto became the strongest with a result of 28:21 and Mariana Machado, who won the women’s race with a time of 32:08.

A  marathon was held in Funchal, where José Sousa finished first with a time of 2:23:36, which allowed him not only to win, but also to become the national champion of Portugal in marathon running.

In India, the Tata Mumbai marathon  was a success for athletes from Ethiopia. Yeshi Chekole won the women’s race with a time of 2:25:13, while among men, Tadu Abate was the best, who covered the distance in 2:09:55.

In Hong Kong, Shitae Eshete from Bahrain won the women’s marathon with a time of 2:27:03. In the men’s race, Melauku Belachow was the first, finishing with a time of 2:09:39.

In Chongqing, both men and women won victories among Ethiopians. Adisu Tesfahun was the winner among men with a time of 2:08:28, while Kebebush Isma won the women’s marathon, covering the distance in 2:24:48.

In Santa Pola,  the Kenyans fully controlled the course of the half marathon: Brian Kibor became the winner among men with a time of 1:00:49, and among women, Daisilah Jerono set a personal best of 1:07:27. In the parallel 10 km race, Jacob Kropp won with a time of 27:45.

In Granolliers, Esau Kipkorir was the first among men with a result of 1:00:39, and among women, debutante Nuria Gil pleasantly surprised the experts, winning with a time of 1:12:11.

In Montferland, Bertokan Velede set a new personal best of 1:07:15, which allowed her to confidently win the competition. Among men, the victory was won by Kenyan athlete Vincent Kipchumba, who covered the distance in 1:01:39.

In Naples, the  winners of the half marathon were Cassandra Parker with a time of 1:14:28 for women and Joel Reichov with a time of 1:03:28 for men. The race brought together many strong athletes and showed an increase in interest in road races in the United States.

In Tempe, during the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series, Milo Greder won with a time of 1:02:23, and among women, Obsi Birru won the championship, who showed a result of 1:19:18.

In the French SaintGrégoire, Semvehon Antenech and Tekan Berche became the winners at a distance of 10 km.

In South Africa,  in the Bay to Bay 30 km race, Gerda Stein among women and Edward Jack among men became the best.

In Morocco, Fatima Aafir and Ismail El Oazzari became the national champions in cross country after confident performances. In India, the  national half marathon in Kolkata was won by Panchanan Bera with a time of 1:04:20.

In Kenya, during the second stage of the AK Athletics Series, Aaron Kiplagat won the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:33.7, Nymph Kiteta among women at the same distance with a time of 34:21.7, Frida Ndinda in the 5000 meters (16:31.9) and Emily Jerope in the 800 meters, who showed a result of 2:06.6.
