On January 25, the prestigious WA Platinum women’s marathon took place in Osaka, Japan, where four athletes managed to cover the distance in less than 2 hours and 20 minutes. The victory was won by the representative of Uganda Stella Chesang, who for the first time in her career ran from 2:20 and finished with a result of 2:19:31. Ethiopians Bedatu Girpa and Vorkenesh Edesa took second and third places, respectively, and Japanese Mikuni Yada, who participated in the marathon for the first time, showed 2:19:57 – the best debut result among Japanese athletes.
In Morocco, on the same day, the marathon was held in Marrakech, where the hosts won a landslide victory in both events. The men’s marathon was won by Abdelhadi Labali with a personal best of 2:07:34 and a significant advantage over her rivals from Ethiopia. In the women’s race, Hayat Benhniya was the fastest, also updating her own achievement – 2:24:48. Her compatriots Oumayma Saud and Kautar Farqussi finished next. In the accompanying half marathon, the winners were Hisham Ouladha among men and Fatima Ezzahra Birdaha among women.
In Seville, Frenchman Emmanuel Rudolph-Leviss won a tense half marathon, setting a new personal best of 1:00:24. He was just one second ahead of Kenyan Owen Korir. The women’s race was dominated by Ethiopian athlete Zeineba Yimer, who not only won, but also updated the course record, finishing in 1:06:33.
In Muscat (Oman), the best in the marathon distance were Ugandan Victor Kwemoy and Ethiopian Yeneababa Ejigu. Sweden’s Emil Danielsson and Ethiopia’s Ejiga Silenath won halfway through the victory. Meanwhile, in Ethiopia, at the ten-kilometer race in Hawassa, Olympic medalist Hagos Gebrihvet confidently finished first with a time of 28:03, and among women she won Birkke Ambesa.
In the Spanish city of Vilafranca del Penedès, the victory was celebrated by the Ugandan Abel Chebet and the Spaniard Meritsel Soler. In Sharjah, the fastest in the women’s 5 km race was the Moroccan Rkiya El Mukkim, and in the Thai Bura Rami, the winners of the marathon were the Ethiopian athletes Taso and Tilahun.
Among the cross competitions, attention was drawn to the Campaccio Cross in Italy, where Nadia Battocletti won for the second time, despite a fall in the middle of the distance. She won the six-kilometer race with a significant advantage over her rivals. In the men’s race, the fastest was the representative of Burundi, Egide Ntakarutimana.
At the Belgian stage of the Lotto CrossCup, the author of the European record for 10 km Jana Van Lent triumphed, confidently winning at a distance of 8 km. In the men’s race, the first place was won by Ugandan Kenneth Kiprop. In Spain, where the track conditions were extremely difficult due to mud, Nassim Gassous and Isabel Barreiro became champions. Iraq and India also held their own cross country championships, where Sarah Zugair and El Mostafa Akkaoui won as well as Nandini Gupta and Harmanyot Singh respectively.
Some of the strongest runners competed at the Osaka Half Marathon , and almost all the leaders set new personal records. In the men’s race, Taiga Hirayama won with a new track record of 1:00:50, while in the women’s race, Yumi Yoshikawa was the best, finishing in 1:09:14.
At the end of the sports day in Ireland, Michelle Finn and Jonas Stafford celebrated the victory in the five miles, and in Chile, Ricardo Rojas and Margarita Macias finished first in the half marathon distance.
