The world marathon season in the last days of January and early February continues in the countries of the Middle East, Japan, Italy, Spain and South America.

Ethiopia’s triumph at the Riyadh Marathon

On January 31, the Riyadh Marathon (WA Elite Label) took place in the capital of Saudi Arabia, where Ethiopian athletes confidently took a leading position. In the women’s race, Kena Girma set a personal best of 2:25:56, which allowed her to finish first. In second place was her compatriot Aberash Demisse with a result of 2:27:15. The men’s race was led by Abebaw Munie, who won with a time of 2:09:31, ahead of Assefa Mengisa (2:09:44). In the half marathon distance, personal records and victories were won by Zewoody Voodoo (70:17) and Abel Bekele (62:40).

Dubai Marathon: debut with a world-class result

On February 1, at the Dubai Marathon (WA Label), representatives of Ethiopia were again out of competition. The sensation was the debut of African 10,000 m champion Nibred Melak, who won his first marathon with an impressive time of 2:04:00. He was almost two minutes ahead of Yasin Haji, who also set a personal best of 2:05:52. The third place was won by Rwandan John Hakizimana, updating the national record – 2:06:04.

In the women’s category, Anchinalu Dessi celebrated the victory, improving her previous record by four minutes – 2:18:31. The second and third places also went to the Ethiopian team of Muliye Dekebo – 2:18:43, and Fantu Worku – 2:19:08. An impressive debut was shown by 20-year-old Tiringo Mulu, who became fourth (2:21:12). And the 2022 world indoor champion Lemlem Hailu finished the distance eleventh – 2:23:55.

Beppu–Oita Marathon

In Oita, Japan, the victory at the prestigious Beppu–Oita Mainichi Marathon (WA Elite Label) was won by the representative of Ethiopia Getachew Masresha, setting a new personal record of 2:06:49. In second and third places were finished by Japanese runners: Yuya Yoshida (2:06:59) and Asai Kuroda (2:07:03). In the women’s mass race, Chika Yokota won, showing a result of 2:43:45.

Half marathon in Maruham: records despite the wind

In windy conditions, Kenyan athlete Richard Ethir won the Marugame Half Marathon (WA Elite Label), setting a course record of 59:07. Among women, Kenyan Dolphin Omare won for the third time in a row (66:15). Second place went to European 10 km record holder Aylesh McColgan (67:08), and third place went to Susan Kamoto with a personal best of 67:56.

  • Murcia (Spain): Kenyan Peter Kariyuki (2:16:52) and Polish Dominika Stelmach won with a personal best of 2:36:36. In the half marathon, the best were Samson Kipyego Fight (63:06) and Moroccan Oumeimah Saud (71:59).
  • Sabaudia (Italy): Kenyans Peter Kwemo Ndorobo (2:11:47, PB) and Gladys Chemutai (2:37:57) won the race.
  • Paris (France): Ugandan Martin Kiprotić won the 10 km race – 28:36. In women, Angela Viciosa was the best (33:24).
  • Bologna (Italy): Tunisian Mohamed Ginawi won the 10-kilometer race (28:41). The second was the Italian Daniele Meucci (29:06).
  • Bad Füssing (Germany): Domenika Mayer improved her personal best in the 10 km – 31:41.
  • Abu Dhabi (UAE): In the Cancer Run, the fastest were Moroccans Yasser Echchaachoui (28:48) and Rkiya El Mokim (34:37).
  • Trikala (Greece): Melissa Anastasaki (8 km – 30:56) and Nikos Stamoulis (10 km – 33:37) became the champions of the country in cross-country race.
