Sports news: second weekend of February 2026

In recent days, numerous athletics starts have taken place in different parts of the world, which have given new records, unexpected debuts and bright victories of top athletes. We offer an overview of key events.

The men’  s marathon in Seville ended in a dramatic struggle, with a group of Ethiopian representatives fighting to the last meter of the distance, and Shura Kitata won against Asrara Hirden. Their photo finish result was 2:03:59. This is the best marathon result in the world in the 2026 season. The women’s marathon was won by Alisa Vainio and set a new national record for Finland – 2:20:39, winning after four starts in five months South African Maxime Chaumeton with a national record of 13:12. Among women, Kenyan Miriam Cherop triumphed.

The Barcelona Half Marathon also brought the world a new season record. Hagos Gebrihvit won with a time of 58:05. In the women’s category, Kenyan Lois Chemnung set a course record of 1:04:01.

In the UAE, at the prestigious Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon,  Asmarech Anlay from Ethiopia won with a result of 1:07:22 in her debut half marathon. Among men, Kenyan runner Jeffrey Kamworor was the fastest – 58:14, ahead of rivals from Bahrain and Kenya.

In Israel, Lonach Salpeter became the winner of the national championship at a distance of 5 km, overcoming the track in 16:05. In men, Zemenu Muchie showed the best result – 14:04.

In Sheffield, Britain, Nick Griggs won the international 5 km race, becoming the first representative of the hosts to triumph in the last two decades. His result is 13:37. Among women, Emily Haggard Kearney was the fastest in the 3 km race with a time of 9:07.

The Kenyan city of Eldoret hosted a stage  of the WA XC Tour Gold series – Sirikwa Classic. Agnes Ngetich confidently won the women’s 10 km, finishing with a score of 32:28. In the men’s race, Benson Korir won at the same distance, who, thanks to a powerful finishing acceleration, was ahead of his rivals on the last lap.

A large-scale Access Bank Lagos City Marathon took place in Lagos, where Kenyan athlete Ezra Kerin won with a result of 2:11:55 and won the main prize – 50 thousand dollars. In the women’s race, Dinke Meleka from Ethiopia became the best.

In the United States, the Mesa Marathon  ended with the victory of JJ Santana (2:19:09) among men and Tiara Tovler (2:38:54) among women.

In Spanish Ibiza, Ebeltal Gashaun from Ethiopia won the 10 km race, setting a personal best of 27:47. In the women’s race, the victory was celebrated by Idaira Prieto, who also updated her best result – 32:11.

In Japan, two cities at once hosted major road starts. In Ome, Shiori Dzama and Masato Arao won, and in Kumamoto,  Eriho Otsuka and Mahiro Sato became the fastest.

In Monaco,  Diane van Es showed the second result in the history of Europe at a distance of 5 km – 14:33, only a second behind the current continental record. Tim Verbaandert won the men’s race (13:24). Faith Kipyegon made her debut at a distance of 10 km, running it in 29:46 and entering the top 15 of the world ranking in history.

In Turkey, at the Trabzon Half Marathon,  the former European champion in cross country Ali Kaya became the first, and among women Nursena Cheto won.

In Croatian Split, Kenyans Shadrack Kimayo and Ruth Mbatha became the fastest at the local marathon. In the United States, at the Austin Marathon, Joseph Whelan showed the best result.

In South Africa, the Balwin Run marathon ended with the victory of George Kusche in the men’s and Jenna Challenor in the women’s race. In the CDM 4 in 1 marathon,  the best were Rirhanzu Rangani and Zimbabwe’s Annie Chirisa.

In Italy, the marathon in Terna brought victory to the Moroccan Hisham Boufars, and in Morocco at the Tamesna Half Marathon, Omar Ait Shitachen and Olympia Jerope became the fastest.

Let’s finish the review with the results from the Italian city of Verona, where  the Romeo & Giulietta Run Half Marathon took place, in which Terrence Bizosa won with a time of 1:03:51.
