Sports news: first weekend of March 2026

Last week was full of records and bright victories. Read more about the main events. A new world record was set for the half marathon in Lisbon. How the 10 km race ended in Bilbao. The national championship in 10 km was held in Germany. An impressive finish in Los Angeles, the return of Prisca Cherono and many other news from Poznan, Nagoya, Nanjing, Belgrade and Paris.

One of the most high-profile events was the performance of Jacob Kiplimo at the Lisbon Half Marathon. The athlete set a world record, covering the distance in 57:20 and surpassing the previous achievement of Yomif Kejelchi by 11 seconds. After the 15 km mark, he broke away from his competitor Nicholas Kipkorir from Kenya and showed a phenomenal segment in 13:31 on the 15-20 km section. Kipkorir finished second with a result of 58:08,  and immediately behind him are two more Kenyans: Gilbert Kiprotich and Benard Langat. The fifth position was taken by Mohamed Ismail from Djibouti, also covering the distance in less than an hour.

In the women’s race in Lisbon, Tsige Gebreselama from Ethiopia confidently won, who broke away from her rivals by almost two minutes and finished with a time of 64:48. The second and third places were taken by Janet Chepngetich and Regina Wambui from Kenya. The sixth result was shown by the representative of Rwanda Emeline Imanizabayo, setting a national record, and Mekdes Volodya repeated the record of France.

In Bilbao , Switzerland’s Dominic Lobalu won the 10-kilometer race, ahead of Abderagman Aferdi and Ayana Geneti. The women’s start ended with the victory of Ethiopia’s Ayaech Ayachev, who finished with a result of 30:00.

In Nottingham, James Kingston and Jess Gibbon became the strongest at the British Cross Country Championships, and in Langerthal, Switzerland,  Judith Weider and Fabian Ebersold became long-distance cross country champions.

In Welzen, Germany , Nils Voigt won the national championship in the 10 km, setting a personal best of 27:56. The women’s race was won by Eva Dieterich, the silver medalist of Europe at a distance of 10 km.

In Poznan, Gábor Karshai from Hungary and Valentine Jebet from Kenya won, while in Vienna, Fabien Vonlanten and Andreas Vojta became the best in the half marathon.

The return of 45-year-old Prisca Cherono in Los Angeles was impressive: she won the marathon with a result of 2:25:20, ahead of Kellyn Taylor from the United States. In the men’s race, the winner was determined by the photo finish – Nathan Martin and Michael Kamau showed the same time of 2:11:18.

The half marathon in Paris also ended with high results: among women, Ftawa Zeray from Ethiopia won, and in the men’s race, the fastest was the Kenyan athlete Kennedy Kimutai.

In Nagoya, Japan , Sheila Chepkirui from Kenya retained the women’s marathon championship title, finishing in 2:21:54 in difficult weather conditions. In total, more than 17 thousand runners took part in the race, which made it the largest women’s marathon in the world.

No less interesting were the results in Namibia, where Mathias Simon and Salmi Mpingana Nduwiteka won the men’s and women’s races of the Rossing Marathon. Meanwhile, in Belgium, two-time Olympic medalist Bashir Abdi excelled, who set a national record in the half marathon with a time of 59:28.

In Greece, Anastasia Marinakou and Panagiotis Bitados triumphed at the Athens Half Marathon, who also updated the track record. In Serbia, Kenyan runners Christine Mutua and Rafael Gacheru showed the best results at the White Cross competition.

In France, Felix Boer and Emmaculate Jepkosgay won the cross country championship, and in the United States, Cassidy Guiton and Argentine Vladimir Zander-Velloso won the Myrtle Beach Marathon.

The week ended with competitions in China, where Yang Xiaohua and Zhang Long became the country’s champions in cross country.
