Sports news: second weekend of March 2026

Athletics world experienced another intense competition weekend, which brought new records, phenomenal debuts on marathon and cross country tracks in different parts of the world.

Barcelona marathon became historic thanks to the Ethiopian Fotien Tesfai. On her debut, she showed the second result among all women in history – 2:10:51. This result was surpassed only by Ruth Chepngetich from Kenya. With a convincing margin, Tesfai win ahead of Joan Jepkosgei and Zeinebu Yimer, who also updated their personal achievements. Among men, Abel Chelangat from Uganda was the fastest,  finishing the distance with a personal best of 2:04:57 and ahead of two Kenyan athletes.

The Seoul Marathon  confirmed the dominance of athletes from Ethiopia. Haven Gailu won with a personal best of 2:19:09 and led the trio of teams that managed to run faster in two hours and twenty minutes.

A  half marathon was held in New York, where Kenyan Helen Obiri set a new course record of 66:33. She finished ahead of Sharon Lokedy and British debutante Megan Keith. The men’s race was won by South Africa’s Adrian Wildshutt with a time of 59:30, and Gulvir Singh made history as the first Indian to cover the distance in less than an hour.

In Japan, the five-kilometer Fukuoka race was won by Kio Furuhashi and Kenyan Caroline Cariba.

The World Student Cross Country Championships were held in Italy. Elisha Yeko from Uganda won at a distance of 10 km, and among women, the strongest was Italian Lucia Arnoldo. In the mixed relays, the Belgian team triumphed, ahead of the Italians and Germans in a matter of seconds.

In Warsaw,  during the BEMORE5K race, Kenyan athlete Rafael Gacheru Karita became the fastest among men. His result was 14 min 5 seconds. Second Albert Kipkorir Tonui with 14:08. Poland Simon Skalski finished third with a result of 14 min 9 seconds. Valentine Jebet won the women’s race with a result of 15:38.
