Sports news: first weekend of April 2026

Last weekend, there were only a few bright events in road running and marathon. We offer an overview of the main results of the competitions that took place in France, South Korea, Turkey, Ukraine and other countries.

Frenchman Jimmy Gressier was one step away from the world record at a distance of 5 km, showing a result of 12:51 at the Urban Trail de Lille competition. He updated his own European record, improving it by six seconds. The athlete overcame the final kilometer in 2:26. Three runners ran out of 13 minutes at once: Ethiopian Addis Ihune finished second with a result of 12:54 (personal best), and Frenchman Yann Schrub became third – 12:56,  also surpassing the previous European record. National records were set by Maxime Chaumeton from South Africa (13:06), Narve Gille Nordas from Norway (13:10) and Ruben Kerenzhan from Luxembourg (13:20). The women’s race was won by 17-year-old Marta Alemayo, who showed the best result in the history of U20 – 14:15. She rose to third place in the world ranking of all time. Athletes from Ethiopia took the entire podium: Javi Abera finished second with a personal best of 14:22, Yenenesh Shymket – third (14:24). The national record of Djibouti was set by Samia Hassan Nour, who became fourth with a result of 14:38. The best among the Europeans was the German Constanze Klosterhalfen – seventh place (15:04). Portuguese Patricia Silva finished twelfth, setting a national record of 15:20.

In the women’s 10 km race, Kenyan Agnes Ngetich won a convincing victory with a result of 28:58, showing the third fastest time in history. She was ahead of her closest rivals by more than a minute. Second and third places were taken by Ethiopians Chaltu Dida (30:02) and Hirut Meshesha (30:05), for whom it was her debut at the distance. Italy’s Nadia Battocletti was fourth with a national record of 30:08, just one second short of the European record. Also, national records were set by Emeline Imanizabayo from Rwanda (30:39) and Olympic triathlon champion Cassandra Beaugrand, who finished seventh with a French record of 30:52.

In the men’s race, Khairi Bejiga won with a result of 26:51. He was followed by Laban Kosgei (26:59), Cornelius Conor (27:06) and Cornelius Kemboi (27:12). The fifth was Tim Verbaandert, who set the record of the Netherlands – 27:17. Denmark’s national record was also updated – Joel Ibler Lilleso showed 27:55.

Kenyan Isaac Kipkemboi Tu won the Gunsan Saemangeum Marathon  with a time of 2:07:15, setting a course record and a personal achievement. Second and third were his compatriots Kipkemoy Kiprono (2:07:16) and Robert Kipkorir Kwambai (2:07:24). In the women’s race among local athletes, Jung Hyun Ji won with a result of 2:36:23, which became her personal best.

Turkey’s Ali Kaya won the CISM World Half Marathon Championships among military personnel, finishing in 61:17 and ahead of his rivals by more than a minute. The second was Inyasi Sulle from the Tanzanian team (62:18). In the women’s race, Cicely Panga from Tanzania won – 69:42.

At the Ukrainian Road Running Championships, Natalia Strebkova (73:14) and BogdanIvan Gorodyskyi (64:51) became the winners of the half marathon. On Saturday, at a distance of 5 km, Viktoria Shkurko (15:55) and Andriy Atamanyuk (14:01) won the championship titles. In the road mile races, Anzhelika Bondar (4:58) and Dmytro Nikolaychuk (4:21) won.

Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui confidently won  the Osterlauf 10 km race in Nipecchina  with a result of 30:41, ahead of compatriots Christine Komen (31:56, personal best) and Sheila Jeruto (32:22). In the men’s race, Kefjaleu Kifle from Ethiopia won – 28:12.

Raymond Cheruiyot from Kenya won the Giro Media Blenio 10K road race with a result of 29:19. Moroccan Elhussin Elazzaoui finished second (29:22), third – Jean Marie Vianney Niyomukiza from Burundi (29:24). Former European marathon champion Daniele Meucci took sixth place (29:45).

Kenyan Brian Kipyegon won the half marathon at the Kanto Region Student Athletics Championships with a score of 61:23.
