Sports news: second weekend of April 2026

Last weekend will be remembered for the Paris Marathon, race walking competitions in Brazil and a number of other prestigious starts. Competitions in different parts of the world brought a tight fight in elite races, updating track records and demonstrative results.

The Paris Marathon updated the record for the number of participants to 58.853. In the men’s race, Italian Emanebrhan Krippa won his first victory in the marathon, showing a personal best. Shure Demise from Ethiopia confidently won, setting a track record and overcoming the time limit of 2 hours 20 minutes for the first time.

Brazil hosted  the 31st Lugano Trophy / World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships. The tournament was held for the first time on the South American continent and was held at new distances – half marathon and marathon. The medal standings were led by the Chinese team, which won six medals. In the overall medal standings, Japan and Italy were next, while the Italians topped the team rating in terms of points.

In the women’s half marathon, Peruvian Kimberly Garcia won, who managed to break away from her rivals in the middle of the distance. The second place was taken by Mexican Alejandra Ortega. The team gold among women was won by the national team of Ukraine, ahead of the Spanish team. In the women’s marathon, the most resounding success in her career was celebrated by Paula Torres from Ecuador, who won both the individual and team competition.

In the men’s half marathon, Italian Francesco Fortunato snatched victory at the end of the distance. The Japanese national team, despite not the best finish of its record holder, became the first in the team standings. In the marathon, Hayato Katsuki from Japan won a landslide victory.

In the road marathons of Europe, a number of bright results were recorded. In Rotterdam, Mekides Shimeles from Ethiopia updated the track record, showing a time of 2:18:56, and in the men’s race, her compatriot Guye Adula won with a result of 2:03:54.

In Hannover,  Dominika Mayer won the marathon for the fourth time in a row, setting a course record and becoming the second fastest marathon runner in German history.

In other cities around the world – Milan, Zurich, Linz, Zaragoza, São Paulo and Lodz – marathons ended with victories for athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia. In Beijing, Chinese runner Wang Wenjie set a national record in the half marathon, and in Washington, D.C., Ethiopia’s  Asayech Aichev won the 10-mile race.
