Sports news: last weekend of April 2026

The last competition weekend brought a number of significant events in world athletics. For the first time, an official marathon record of two hours was recorded. The London Marathon has again updated the record for the most massive participation. Read more about high-profile victories in marathons and road races in Europe, America, Asia and Africa.

The  2026 London Marathon went down in history as the most massive: 59,830 participants covered the distance, which became a new official record, surpassing the achievements  of the  2025 New York Marathon.

The main event of the competition was an incredible breakthrough in the men’s marathon. Kenyan Sebastian Sawe was the first in the world to cover the marathon distance in less than two hours in officially permitted conditions – 1:59:30. Together with him, Kelvin Kiptum’s previous world record was also surpassed by Yomif Kejelcha from Ethiopia, who showed 1:59:41 in his debut marathon. The world record holder for 10 km and in the half marathon Jacob Kiplimo, a representative of Uganda, finished only third with a result of 2:00:28. For Save, this is the fourth victory in four marathons held.

In the women’s race in London , Tigst Assefa from Ethiopia won, who not only defended her title, but also set a separate world record in the women’s marathon – 2:15:41. For the first time in history, three athletes in one race finished faster than 2 hours and 16 minutes.

At international races in different countries of the world, many bright results were also recorded. In Santiago, Tigist Getnet won the marathon with a course record of 2:27:58, and Cornelius Chepkok won the men’s race. In Hamburg, the Moroccan Othman El-Goumri sensationally won with a national record of 2:04:24, with all ten best participants running in 2:06.  setting a track record.

In the United States, a high-profile event was the debut of 25-year-old Vincent Mauri, who covered the distance in 2:05:54 at the Toledo Marathon and became only the fourth American in history to run from 2:06 on a certified track.

In Madrid, Kenyan Mike Chematot and Kena Girma won.

In Bengaluru, India, Rwanda’s Florence Niyonkuru won an unexpected victory with a national record.

In Oslo,  former cross-country skiing star Therese Johaug won the city’s 10 km race, setting a personal achievement.

National championships in the 10,000 meters were held in Italy, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Finland, Sweden, and new champions of the  country in the half marathon were determined.
