Sports news: first weekend of May 2026

The beginning of May was busy for world athletics. On all continents, the competitive season continues to gain momentum.

In France, in Le Puy-en-Velay, on May 3, the 43rd 15 km race took place, where both victories were won by Kenyan runners. Charles Rotic finished with a score of 44:01, and Brenda Jepchumba Keney covered the distance in 49:17.

Berehanu Tsegu from Ethiopia won the Prague Marathon with a time of 2:05:51, ahead of his closest rivals by almost two minutes. In the women’s race, Kenyans took the entire podium, and Milenscent Jelimo won with a time of 2:24:19. As part of the competition, the European Police Championship was also held.

On the same day, the second Dublin City Half Marathon was held in Dublin, which was remembered for new track records. In the 40+ age category, Sorcha Nikdhomnail won with a time of 1:11:25, and among men, Sean Tobin was the best, who showed a result of 1:03:11.

In the United States, the winners of the 48th Lincoln Marathon were Taylor Somers (2:39:59) and Jacob Vander Platts (2:21:13). Another resounding victory in the United States was won by Steve Martinez, who won the HOAG OC marathon in Newport Beach with a time of 2:14:06 and met the qualification standard for the 2028 Olympic qualifiers.

In Tokyo, during the Asics Tokyo Speed Race, Shinsaku Kudo became the winner of the elite 5 km race (13:31), and among women, Kaede Kawamura became the first, who set a personal best of 15:39.

In Brazil, at the international marathon in Florianópolis, which is owned by the World Athletics label, Kenyan Vivian Jeptanui (1:13:32) and Brazilian Wallace Evangelista Caldash (1:03:40) won. Both showed the best results of their careers.

The traditional “Constitution Run on May 3” took place in Warsaw at a distance of 5 km. The winner among men was Ukrainian Oleksiy Pisarev with a result of 14:46, and the Polish Agnieszka Chozenpa won the women’s race – 15:56, setting a personal record.

In Italy, Mark Kiptu from Uganda (1:00:09) and Kenyan Jedida Chepkeema (1:10:04) triumphed at the Stramilano half marathon.

In Canada, at the Vancouver Marathon, Japan’s Fujiwara Kosuke (2:22:03) and the Netherlands’ Mickey Kittels (2:33:02) won, while Max Turek and Natasha Wodak became the best in the half marathon.

On May 2, as part of the festival “Crossfest. Spring 2026”, the Ukrainian Amateur Cross-Duathlon Championship was held in Ukraine. Dmytro Stetsyuk became the champion among men (1:16:15), among women Alyona Safronenko won (1:39:30).
