World athletics is preparing for the main starts of the season and about the victory of Mykola Mevsha in Gdansk.

The organizers of the 2026 European Championships in Birmingham have published the final applications of the participants. The tournament will be attended  by 1645 athletes from 49 countries. Among them are ten reigning world champions and a number of Olympic champions, including Armand Duplantis, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Miltiadis Tentoglou, Keely Hodgkinson and Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who will try to win her third consecutive European High Jump title.

Meanwhile, the U20 Junior World Championships have begun in Eugene, USA, more than 1800 athletes from 147 countries have been announced, which will be a record figure in the history of the competition. Among the participants are many winners of the previous world championship and young athletics stars who will be considered as future leaders of world athletics.

Ukrainian track and field athlete Mykola Mevsha won the prestigious 10 km race in Gdansk, Poland, which was held as part of the 32nd St. Dominic Race and at the same time had the status of the Polish road running championship. Mykola Mevsha covered the distance in 29 minutes 43 seconds, ahead of the Pole Marcin Biskup (29:45). In the women’s race, the victory and the title of champion of Poland was won  by Olimpia Breza with a result of 33:57. Monica Dubella became the silver medalist (34:42), and the bronze medalist was Angelica Olobri (35:01).

At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Australian team topped the athletics medal standings with 34 awards, including 12 gold. The second place was taken by Jamaica, the third by England. Two gold medals for Australia were won by Rose Davis in the 5000 and 10,000 meters, and Abby Caldwell in the one-mile and Eleanor Patterson in the high jump also became champions. Patterson became the only athlete to win gold at both home Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, in 2014 and 2026. Jazmine Sawyers, after silver in 2014, climbed to the highest step of the podium in the long jump, successfully returning from a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2024.

Six athletes defended the titles won four years ago in Birmingham: Curtis Marshall, Lyndon Victor, Matt Denny, Jemima Montag, Sarah Mitton and Camryn Rogers.

Scotland’s Josh Kerr, two weeks after setting a one-mile world record, won the Commonwealth Games final in front of a home crowd. He ran the final lap so powerfully that he confidently broke away from his rivals.

During the competition, a number of Games records were set. Emmanuel Esseme ran the 100 meters in 9.83 seconds, Curtis Marshall broke 5.85 m in the pole vault, Ethan Katzberg threw the hammer at 80.97 m, Faith Čerotic won the 3000 m hurdles with a result of 9:01.76, Eleanor Patterson repeated the high jump record (1.96 m), and Camryn Rogers set the record in the women’s hammer throw (74.91 m).

At the IFAM Oordegem tournament in Belgium, several athletes demonstrated world-class results at once. Belgian Pauline Kukuyt improved her personal best in the 400 m hurdles to 53.90 and came second in the European ranking of the season. The main sensation was the 18-year-old representative of Djibouti Wabari Iguie Hussain, who ran 5000 meters in 12:56.12, setting a national record. This is the best result in history among juniors under 20 years old outside Kenya and Ethiopia.  American Abdihamid Noor and Kenyan Laban Kosgei also exchanged 13 minutes, showing 12:57.32 each.

At international competitions in different countries, a number of strong results were also recorded. In Germany, South Africa’s Mlenga Retschiditzwe ran 100 meters in 10.14 seconds. In Portugal, Irina Rodrigues won the discus throw with a score of 63.22 m, and Auriol Dongmo pushed the shot put with a score of 18.79 m.
