World athletics continues to demonstrate a high level of competition, giving fans new records, unforgettable performances and discovering new names that can become stars of the international arena in the near future. Read about all this below.
The US team confirmed its status as one of the leaders in world athletics by leading the medal standings at the international championships in Eugene. American athletes won 24 awards, of which 12 became gold. The second place was taken by Kenya, and the third place went to Italy. In total, medals were won by representatives of 42 countries.
In the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, the hosts of the competition, athletes from the Dominican Republic, confidently won the team competition, winning 14 gold medals. Among the best results of the tournament was the performance of Silinda Morales in the discus throw, where the athlete showed a result of 62.58 meters.
In Newcastle, Britain, in the Quayside 5K road race, representatives of Ireland became winners in both main categories. Emily Haggard-Kearney triumphed among women with a time of 15:40, setting a new track record. In the men’s race, Chris Coulson finished first, covering the distance in 14:17.
The Cali Pacific Race 10K was dominated by Kenyan athletes. Miriam Chebet showed a result of 31:50 and became the best among women, and Charles Matata won the men’s standings with a time of 28:57.
In the Eldoret Half Marathon, Millicent Jelimo (70:25) and Eric Kyplangat (61:07) became the winners. Another half marathon held in Bahati ended with the victories of Mercy Chepkorir (72:57) and Kiprop Kimutai (61:20).
In Cleveland, USA, during The Guardian Mile, Kaylee Deilly won with a result of 4:16.88. Her time surpassed the current world record, but due to the lack of official certification of the track, it will not be included in the record lists. Among men, the best was Brannon Kidder, who covered the distance in 3:55.24. In New York, at the Brooklyn Road Mile, Mady Boreman (4:31) and Eric Gault (3:57) won.
In Great Britain, at the British Milers Club Grand Prix, 20-year-old Ava Lloyd won the 1500 meters with a time of 4:01.78, and Ireland’s Sophie O’Sullivan set a personal best in the 800 meters, running it in 1:59.65.
Finnish javelin thrower Jere Murto, the reigning European champion among athletes under 18, improved the world record of the season in his age category to 81.23 meters. At the Japanese Championships among schoolchildren, Niko Nozawa in the triple jump and Sekito Matsushita in the 100-meter sprint were remembered for their high results.
Athletes from around the world also distinguished themselves with new national records. Argentine Martin Saavedra set the national record in the long jump with a result of 7,82 meters. Slovenian Vid Botolin updated the national record in the 5000 meters, with a time of 13:27.96, and Oman’s Ali Anwar Al-Balushi set a new country record in the 200 meters, running it in 20.40 seconds.
