Sports news: third weekend of August 2026

Last weekend was full of events in world athletics. From Asia’s record in the hammer throw to convincing victories in international marathons and half marathons, athletes from different parts of the world confirmed their high class at the prestigious starts of the season.

At the Chinese Athletics Championships in Quzhou, Zhang Jiale set a new Asian record and a national record in the women’s hammer throw, with a result of 78.64 meters. The silver medalist was won by Olympic medalist Zhao Jie with a result of 77.20 m. At the same competition, Zhang Linzhu won the shot put with a result of 19.63 m.

Finland’s Vainio brought her country the first-ever medal of the European Championships in Birmingham in the women’s marathon, and her advantage over her closest pursuer at the finish line was 4 minutes 55 seconds, which became a new tournament record. Italian Nadezhda Battocletti won gold in the 5000 meters for the second time in a row and became only the second athlete in the history of the European Championships to achieve such a result. In addition, the Italian national team won two medals in the women’s 5000 meters for the first time in history.

At the Golden Sand tournament in Międzyzdroje, Poland, Filipino Ernest John Obiena won the pole vault. The athlete conquered a height of 5.91 m and set a new competition record. The second place was taken by the representative of Qatar Seyfeldin Abdelsalam with a result of 5.75 m, and the third was the American Cole Walsh, who took a height of 5.70 m.

At the Athlete Night Games Fukui in Japan, Hitomi Nakajima set a new national record in the 100-meter hurdles, covering the distance in 12.60 seconds. In the men’s sprint, Shoma Yamamoto clocked 10.05 seconds in the 100-meter dash, while Fuga Sato won the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.54 seconds.

At the international half marathon in Rio de Janeiro among men, Kenyan Nicholas Kiptoo, who covered the distance in 1 hour 3 minutes 20 seconds. In the women’s competition, the best was the Ethiopian Tigist Girma with a result of 1:16:57.

The winners of the CRDB marathon in Dar es Salaam were Kenyans Abraham Kiptum with a time of 2:15:32 and Lois Joy Kemuna, who finished in 2:35:25.

In Mombasa, the marathon distances were won by Little Nick Kitundu with a time of 2:16:02 and Justine Cheptanui Lemtani, who showed a result of 2:36:09.

At the prestigious Falmouth Road Race at a distance of seven miles among men, the representative of Eritrea, Habtom Samuel, won with a result of 30:53. In the women’s standings, Kenyan Pamela Kosgei was the first, finishing in 35:25. The winners of the one-mile races were Heather McLean and Luke Hauser.
