The last days of August were one of the busiest in the athletics calendar. World and national records, victories of Ukrainian athletes and outstanding performances of world athletics stars created a wonderful intrigue on the eve of the Diamond League final, which will be held on September 4-5 in Brussels.

One of the marathons of the World Marathon Majors series took place in Sydney. World champion Perez Jepchirchir from Kenya won the women’s race with a result of 2:18:31. In the men’s race, the representative of Ethiopia Addissu Gobena set a track record, covering the distance in 2:04:42. Seven athletes finished faster than the previous marathon record.

The Olympic champion of the first women’s marathon in the history of the Olympic Games, Joan Benoit Samuelson, at the age of 69, continues to perform at a high level. At the 10-kilometer race in Lima, the American finished 36th overall and became the best in the 65+ age category, covering the distance in 47 minutes 49 seconds.

In Beijing, the humanoid robot Lightning set a unique achievement. The machine covered 100 meters in 9.32 seconds, which is faster than Usain Bolt’s world record (9.58 seconds). The work was created by the Chinese company Honor, and the race itself took place as part of the World Humanoid Robot Games.

The main event of the athletics week was the Diamond League stage in Zurich. Brazilian Alison dos Santos set a new world record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 45.80 seconds. Soon, American Masai Russell updated the world record in the 100-meter hurdles, running in 12.09 seconds. Switzerland’s Audrey Verreau was also among the heroines of the evening, winning the 800-meter hurdles with a time of 1:53.70, which was a Diamond League record and the best performance of the season in the world.

American pole vaulter Hannah Moll continues her successful season. In Zurich, the athlete overcame a height of 4.90 meters, set a personal record and won the second consecutive victory in the Diamond League, securing a ticket to the series finals in Brussels.

Iryna Klymets at the Pál Németh Memorial in Hungary won the hammer throw with a result of 70.56 meters.

At the tournament in Brescia, Italy, Jamaican shot putter Rajindra Campbell won with a new national record of 22.59 meters. At the same competition, Nigeria’s Faivor Ofili was the best in the 200 meters with a time of 22.03 seconds, while Jamaica’s Nikisha Price won the 400 meters in 49.27 seconds.

Italian Nadia Battocletti continues to rewrite the history of national athletics. At the tournament in Bellinzoni, she set a new Italian record in the 1500 meters, showing a result of 3:57.54. In the discus throwing sector, world record holder Mykolas Alekna won with a result of 71.50 meters.

Another historic result was recorded at the prestigious ISTAF tournament in Berlin. American Chase Jackson exceeded the mark of 21 meters in the shot put for the first time in her career. Her result of 21.02 meters became a new US record and a tournament record.

Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh broke the bar at a height of 2.00 meters at the high jump tournament in Heilbronn, Germany, but lost to Australian Eleanor Patterson, who jumped 2.02 meters and equaled her personal best.

Ukrainian athletes also distinguished themselves at road starts in Poland. At the Łańcucka Piątka race, Mykola Mevsha became second at a distance of 5 km with a result of 14:20, and Maryna Nemchenko confidently won among women, running the distance in 16:18.

At the Zbigniew Ludwichowski Memorial in Olsztyn, Poland, Jakub Szymanski won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.21 seconds, Konrad Bukowiecki won the shot put with a score of 21.04 meters, and Japan’s Momone Ueda set a personal record in the javelin throw, sending a projectile to 63.50 meters.

In the pole vault competition Lisek i Przyjaciele, Britain’s Owen Hurd won with a result of 5.65 meters. In the women’s sector, the best was the Polish Zofia Gaborska, who conquered the height of 4.31 meters. Ukrainian Maryna Kilypko took second place.
